Villas’ Island Resort

Master plan and Villas Design for a hospitality beach resort in the Middle East. The main focus was to merge open views with contemporary language, but this presented an environmental performance challenge. With every new iteration, I was able to understand the amount of direct solar gain inside each unit by creating an automated radiation analysis. As a result, we designed the Island Villas, Overwater and Presidential Villas specifying roof mitigations for the increased radiation amount.

Healthcare Projections. How long until 600 beds?

In this project of an expansion wing for a NYC healthcare institution, We were asked to analyse over 10 years of patient records for different types of illnesses to determine their future need and take action with design. Therefore we were asked: How long until 400, 500 or 600 Beds?. Specifically, we used predictive analytics to establish the projected flux of thearment and patient from 2020 to 2040. As a result we proposed an integral design strategy from existing data, a new inpatient tower that also will take care of improving circulation with tunnels and bridges, and relocating diverse sub departments for their future needs.

Rutina Error

“The epidemic functioned as a kind of trigger that brought out the tensions that already existed in our societies “ Slavoj Žižek talking about the Chilean Revolution and The Covid-19 Pandemic.

Before the 2020 pandemic, in 2019 my country Chile was in turmoil, 5 million people on the streets demanding dignity. People started to talk about the “ Social explosion” as the collective demand of structural democratic and economic system reforms. Something in my mind changed that day. I had all these ideas about Chile being the most stable country in the region, and they suddenly vanished leaving a vacuum that my mind started to fill with oniric images that have continued throughout the pandemic, for me this is a “ Social Implosion”.

Since 2018 New York City is my home, so during the “Social Explosion” I mostly watched the debates on Chilean TV with a current theme: the system was slowly but relentlessly collapsing like a badly tied balloon filled with Post Dictatorship Neoliberalism Friedman air. By ear, the people act against uncheck inequalities, the overpowered patriarchal power protest of “A Rapist in Your Path” by Las Tesis, antidemocratic blocks inherited from facism, and a large extecetra. On the eye, My timeline was flooded with massive gatherings of my countrymen and the brutal response by the police. I tried to support family and friends remotely during the “Social Explosion”, while they were part of the million Chilean March, paradoxically, I live this in partial isolation.

Parallel to that, I had a plentiful of dreams that had a charge symbolism from the “social implosion idea” and I registered all of them with the aim to create something. Since art school, I kept a dream journal with the purpose of dialoguing with my unconsciousness by recording the most significant images. In return, I believe to have a better understanding of the feelings and processes and a baseline for art creation. One periodical dream during that time that has come back in the pandemic goes like this: I was sitting in a dining room, at my childhood suburban house in Santiago, the table and the chairs feel like from an old church school (they always did), there are people that I don’t recognize where there should be my sisters and parents. What’s more, there are empty chairs between them (like social distancing), making it hard to communicate. Also, and the table is empty and we are waiting for the food to arrive (but never does). Now, if I look to the sides and end of the room, there are arches (like my house had) and across those are endless tables with similar faceless and numb people. I can’t get up or talk, but I heard a loud group of people chanting and protesting from the streets behind me.

Because of this dream, I was compelled to make a study about bringing this image to “life” by 3d printing the scene of a faceless person sitting in a Catholic Chair, added to the idea of empty chairs, a figure that Biden has used to describe Covid-19 related death. But I was compelled to subvert my dream and randomly aggregate the pieces in ways that reflected the way my countrymen were doing in Santiago. In this process I encountered a lot of errors in the 3d printing machine and I decided to go along and force those errors to continue the idea of the tensions and decay between when the collapsed systems and the implosion of forms. In the future will continue this idea of bringing this aggregation of and try to manifest the error by 3d printing in different substrates like, mineral or fungus. And different Aggregations, like the shape of a head, representing the vote my country did to end Pinochet-Constitution and bring a new collective and diverse mind into the building of new idea of Social.

Covid-19 Design Research

With the COVID-19 Pandemic taking a disproportionate toll on minority communities, we must rethink how we design and research data. It is crucial that we start advocating for open channels of information, allowing us a deeper understanding of inequalities in the healthcare system, and giving us a clear course of action. In this Dashboard (with data from the Covid Tracking Project and data.gov) I show just how the Latino and Black populations in 4 New York counties continue to be unequally affected. Unfortunately the NY government has not provided a breakdown of cases, making it difficult to see the full impact on these communities.

Workplace Covid-19 As a part of the Practice Area Leaders and re-entry strategy at PE we collaborated to create firmwide guidelines to deal with the eventual return to the office. To this end, I created a simulation script on grasshopper to evaluate the 6 feet separation guideline in stationary workstations, and we found out that higher risk of contagion will happen in the hours of the day that requires everyone to use the ciculations spaces such as entry and lunch break. Therefore, we recommend a differentiated entry hours for a 30 percent occupancy ratio in addition to mask and distance measures. This Simulation helped to understand how challenging is to implement the 6 feet in traditional work settings an the need to redesign our workspaces

Institutional Cancer Data Benchmark

In this Benchmark Study, we were asked to benchmark differences between Cancer Patient Volume in the USA and China. After that, we query the information of an institution’s public data to understand how a regional network is prepared to address current and future needs of a community in terms of illness and health. As a result, we were able to develop a plan for an equivalent network in a Chinese Territory, addressing cultural differences and an increased volume.

Play! Children’s Healthcare Hospital.

Play Goal!

Through multiple focus groups of families and patients dealing with the trauma of childhood illness, we learned that play is crucial in hospitals for a child’s therapy and recovery. Families shared their need for normalcy and the value of keeping hope alive. Most patients spend their time in waiting and recovery, moreover, Kids wonder and find refuge in-between spaces. and Our team responded to this with a design that addressed a child’s fascinating way of discovering the world through run and play. We were able to bring a seamless flow of the outside garden form into the halls and terraces, connecting nature with concrete, creating multiple play experiences for children and their families.

Generative Design For fabrication To support our idea, we needed to fine tune facade fabrication constraints in the halls and waiting areas. To quantify the amount of material, and reduce the amount of different panels to fabricate. Therefore, I developed a Galapagos Grasshopper script that evaluated the facade curvature and minimized panelization. Thanks to this algorithm, we showed that this design was almost the same cost as an alternative option with a square solution.

“MoMA exhibition: Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955-1980”.

The experience with MoMA proved the importance of establishing a fluid work flow between physical and virtual models, to deliver an exhibition piece.

In this case, the architectural survey, digital fabrication, ensemble and preparations were constantly made by consulting the central digital model.

NOMI: SAFE WORKING AND LIVING ENVIRONMENT for women at risk AND SURVIVORS of human trafficking

The design carefully considers the goals of providing economic opportunities for women at risk of being victims of human trafficking. In doing so, it takes into account the aspirations of the people who will live and work here. It also integrates women’s larger inclusion in the community, and the site as events and activities that will go beyond training and agriculture.

Passive cooling strategies have been used to create building forms that create shaded courtyards and walkways that remain cool all year round, therefore, incorporating vernacular typologies as well as local materials and craft. The ‘primordial’ forms are direct expressions of responses to climate and aspire to create an environment that is familiar yet thoughtfully designed.

Solar Veil

The aim of this project was to provide a governmental building icon that would transmit a message of efficiency and elegance. Therefore, the project mass has a curved recess shape to provide shade to the public convention terrace and ground atrium. Within this idea, the tower is a curved recess mantle, from the atrium to the top. What’s more, a parametric solar radiation screen was implemented to achieve the most effective shading to the glass openings, while reducing heat accumulation. Finally, this achieved the most openness toward views of the Persian Gulf, while covering the solar heated parts of the facades.

Vertical Dune

This competition proposal for an organic shaped 40 storey tower presented a challenge to deliver area optimization and facade efficiency. In response to this challenge, I created a workflow integrating scripts to successfully tackle the following issues: massing modelling, environmental analysis, view analysis, panelling and solar radiation assessment, interior design, 3d printing and laser cutting, and area calculations output.

Because the script originated for the competition and later, the project, we were able to reduce the direct solar radiation gain to 68% in the final design proposal and to optimize the marketable floor area with an shareable excel output. This studies, paired with careful and experienced design skills were crucial to the positive outcome of
